efficiency, and had held out the prospect of a further grant of $250,000 for a full time Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as the re-organization proceeded: and the gracious letter which heals this appeal was subsequently received, by which His Royal Highness warmly supports the appeal so far as it relates to the Faculty of Medicine,
In these circumstances, the situation was re- viewed by the Finance Committee of the University. It appeared to them both that it was of urgent importance to proceed at once with so much of the appeal as related to the fulfilment of the conditions imposed by the Rockefeller Foundation, and that the gracious action of His Royal Highness in spontaneous- ly giving his support to the appeal would lose something of its effect were it withheld from publication until the whole ground could be covered in detail. It was at the same time felt that, apart from the enumeration of more pressing needs, some general statement of what the University stands for and of what it hopes to accomplish would be more useful than any attempt to frame detailed estimates in advance in a field where, provided that adequate guarantees are given of prudent financial manage- ment, it is certain that any monies available can usefully be spent, while no final limit can be placed to the expanding needs of a modern University. They therefore thought it right themselves to proceed with the preparation of the appeal, and the present statement, which was endorsed by the Court on May
1922, is the outcome of their deliberations.
